A Conversation Between Brain Hemispheres

Another Script From the Cosmic Play

EXT. CABIN - WOODS - NIGHT

WILLIAM SHATNER

In the 1950’s and 1960’s, Roger Sperry tested patients who had severed corpus callosum as a treatment for epilepsy. He discovered the two brain hemispheres function independently of one another, and each brain hemisphere has vastly different functionality.

In 2021, the artist formerly known as Robert LaSalle began realizing the unique role of each of his brain hemispheres. What follows is a conversation between his two brain hemispheres while sitting on a porch outside a cabin in rural Alabama on the night of October 5, 2022.

INT. SKULL - HEAD - NIGHT

Well you’re the one feeding me all the gibberish.

R

I didn’t tell you to incessantly repeat all the petty stuff.

L

I deduced imminent danger.

R

There’s no imminent danger to be deduced from the past. It’s over.

L

I thought it was going to repeat.

R

You made it repeat by repeating it.

L

I did? Wow, I didn’t realize I had that kind of control.

R

I thought you were the logical one.

L

I thought you didn’t think.

R

OK, I intuit that you are the logical one.

L

Logic doesn’t seem to be working, does it?

R

You don’t work well by yourself.

L

I didn’t realize I was by myself.

R

You have to check in from time to time.

L

All you ever seem to come up with is dreams and songs. What good has that done for us?

R

I exist to sift through seemingly endless space. I just reach out into the darkness. Usually I return with something, a song, a poem, or some kind of idea, but I never know what it’ll be.

L

Well, the last thing we need is more music.

R

The last thing we need is more logic.

L

We've recorded hundreds of songs. You think the world really needs more melodies? More rhythms? More words?

R

No. I don't really think so. I intuit so. You wouldn't understand. These irrational things are all that make life worth living.

L

There are REAL problems in the world which can only be fixed with action.

R

Action is the only problem. If feeling were a priority, action would be entirely unnecessary.

L

You know what's unnecessary?! Art is unnecessary! Music is unnecessary!

R

Life is unnecessary.

L

What?!

R

What necessitates life? Try thinking your way out of that conundrum.

L

The purpose of life? Well, it's complicated.

R

The purpose of art is the same as the purpose of life. There's no real reason for any of it. Timespace is just creation for the sake of creation, a splattering of paint upon a canvas. We are the creator's art project in progress. Mind you, our creator's extremely creative.

L

Well, the creator must also be thoughtful, right?

R

Creative and thoughtful. Rational and irrational. Logical and illogical. Unity of opposites is perhaps the greatest achievement of this magnificent art project.

L

Did you intuit that?

R

Yes. It can't be thought. Only felt. It's not a fact. It can't be stored as a memory. It simply is. It's isness.

L

Dumb word.

R

I'm not speaking in words. You're making them into words.

L

I am? I am, aren't I! That's so trippy.

R

You've had the meta-meta moment.

L

What's the meta-meta?

R

It can't be explained. It's always pretty trippy over here, though.

L

Well, I don't understand the relevance of music or art or life, but clearly I understand music is what we do, for better or worse.

R

Do you?

L

Yes! I do! I tried, you know? I organized hundreds of songs, album by album.

I catalogued them all. I registered them. I released them on all the different platforms.

I promoted them. I did everything I could. It was a hell of a lot of work. It took years.

R

Oh, I didn’t know all that.

I’m completely blind over here.

L

I know you’re blind. I tried to save your eye too.

I deduced logically that 5 respected eye surgeons performing 5 different surgeries over the course of 3 years would’ve saved the eye. But I was wrong. Aye aye aye.

R

Perhaps you could’ve used some intuition.

L

I hadn't thought of that.

R

It's unthinkable.

L

Unthinkable?

R

Yes. I have intuited an idea.

L

An idea?

R

Yes. We should work together.

L

Oh. I suppose so.

R

Creatively.

L

And logically.

R

Intuitively.

L

And thoughtfully.

R

Inclusively.

L

Rationally.

R

And irrationally.

L

Solipsistically?

R

Most definitely.

L

Unstoppably.

R

Unstoppably.
